RANCHI: Two Maoist guerrillas were arrested and a huge cache of arms was recovered from separate places in Jharkhand on Monday, police said.

Prasant, sub-zonal commander of the People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), was arrested from Khunti district following a tip-off.

Prasant was arrested in connection with the murder of Tileshwar Sahu, a senior leader of the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), who was shot dead March 8 when he was addressing a rally in Hazaribagh district.

This was the first political killing in the state after the announcement of the 2014 Lok Sabha election schedule.

Sahu was to fight the election on a AJSU ticket.

Police also arrested another sub-zonal commander Ankit from Palamu district on Monday.

They seized 70 live cartridges of AK-47 rifles, 85 hand grenades and 70 detonators from the arrested guerrillas.

Maoists are active in 18 of the 22 districts of the state as well as in over 100 districts throughout the country. (PTI)
