SHILLONG, May 29: The Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has submitted a proposal to the central government for funds to enhance the safety of children in schools. MSCPCR Chairperson Agatha K Sangma on Thursday told reporters about the importance of ensuring children’s safety in educational institutions, stating that schools should be safe spaces for learning, growth, and personal development.
She said the Commission plans to conduct workshops to raise awareness among students and teachers, including sensitization sessions and counselors to support children’s mental and emotional well-being. The proposal was submitted to the central ministry two months ago, she said, expressing hope that the initiative will be approved and launched soon.
Sangma admitted that financial constraints limit the Commission’s ability to fully implement the initiatives. The program is still in its early stages, and a clear structure has not been finalized. Sangma noted that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has developed a mandatory safety handbook for all schools, but many schools in Meghalaya have yet to implement it.
