SHILLONG, May 29: Almost six years after the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly passed a resolution in 2019 in support of introduction of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya, the state and the central governments are yet to move forward with the demand.
Annoyed over the delay, the KSU slammed the state government over it lack of efforts, demanding that it take the matter seriously.
KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar told The Shillong Times that the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act is the need of the hour.
He pointed out how illegal immigrants were easily entering the state due to the lack of any protective mechanism in the state.
“This is very alarming as it poses a threat to the unique identity of the indigenous people of the state,” he said.
The KSU asked the state government to respond satisfactorily to a list of queries on the issues flagged, as the challenge in facilitating a system like the ILP lies in Meghalaya being a transit route for Mizoram, Tripura, and certain districts of Assam.
“The Centre believes that Meghalaya already enjoys protections under the Sixth Schedule, Land Transfer Act, and autonomous district councils that are constitutionally mandated with powers,” the KSU leader said, making it clear that the union would continue to raise the demand for ILP at the appropriate levels.
