WILLIAMNAGAR, June 2: The Williamnagar unit of the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has called for the immediate removal of the district’s DTO following complaints about his misbehaviour and absence from work.
On Monday, the union said its members will not stop protesting until the officer is removed.
“This demand arises from numerous public complaints regarding his unprofessional conduct and unethical behaviour towards the general public,” its president, Goera Marak, said.
The GSU unit alleged that the DTO spends most of his time in his official quarters, even during working hours, and rarely attends the office.
“Instead of performing his duties from the office, he reportedly signs documents from his residence. Citizens, including applicants, are often forced to visit his quarters to obtain signatures. There have also been disturbing claims that he is sometimes found in an inebriated state and uses disrespectful and inappropriate language when dealing with members of the public,” he alleged.
Stating that the union members, too, were at the receiving end of the DTO’s misbehaviour on May 30, when they went to his quarters to get their driving licence applications signed. The officer allegedly insulted them.
“Such behaviour is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate the insult and mistreatment of our members or the people of EGH. We demand the immediate transfer of the DTO and urge the government to appoint a sincere, responsible and people-friendly officer in his place,” the GSU unit said.
It warned that if there is no positive response, they will hold peaceful protests beginning with picketing at the DTO’s office.
