SHILLONG, June 2: A Garo Hills-based socio-political movement — A’chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK) — made a renewed push for Tura as the state’s Winter Capital with Governor CH Vijayashankar.
The organisation met the Governor at Raj Bhavan here on Monday to press for the long-pending demand.
Speaking to reporters, ACHIK’s general secretary in charge of Fields and Operations, Adam R. Sangma emphasized that the demand is rooted in the principles of constitutional federalism and aims to decentralise governance. He argued that making Tura the seasonal capital would help correct the long-standing imbalance in regional development and political representation.
Sangma highlighted Tura’s historical and geopolitical significance, noting that rotating the Secretariat and Legislature between Shillong and Tura would strengthen the state’s presence in western Meghalaya and promote more inclusive governance.
He also pointed out that bringing government services closer to Tura would ease access for residents, allowing them to engage more actively with administrative processes, file grievances, and benefit from development programmes.
Additionally, the seasonal relocation of ministers and top bureaucrats to Tura during the winter would lead to faster decision-making, improved project monitoring, and better feedback from the ground, Sangma said.
Responding to media queries, he stated that the Governor had assured them the demand would be given due consideration.
