SHILLONG, June 2: United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh has downplayed the resignation of senior leader Jemino Mawthoh, claiming that the latter’s exit will not hamper the party.
Lyngdoh told reporters on Monday that the UDP has come thus far based on the party’s performance as a team and not of an individual.
“We will miss those people but we have to move on,” he said adding that the party will discuss the resignation of Mawthoh in its next meeting.
Denying any rift within the party, he said even if there are any issues, the members are free to express their views as difference of opinion is bound to occur in every political party.
He said according to Mawthoh’s resignation letter, the decision to quit was totally personal.
Stating that there are many in the party who can take the position of Mawthoh, Lyngdoh said while people are already talking about 2028 Assembly elections, there is a need for everyone to perform and meet the expectations of the people.
Mawthoh stunned everyone by quitting the party, citing “personal” and “unavoidable circumstances”. He had submitted his resignation letter to the party chief recently.
Speculations are now rife about which political party he will join.
