SHILLONG, June 3: A body belonging to Lt. (Retd.) Govind Thapa, aged 43, was found floating in a pit filled with dirty water near Shiv Mandir in Mawbah on Tuesday around 7:30 am.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, said that a team from the Crime Scene Unit (CSU) along with forensic experts arrived at the site to carry out an investigation.
According to CCTV footage, Thapa was last seen entering the compound on May 5 at around 5:55 pm, Syiem said. He was not seen exiting the premises thereafter, and the footage suggests he may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Thapa, a retired serviceman, was identified at the scene. His body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Syiem added that a case of unnatural death has been registered, and further investigations are underway.
