SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma on Wednesday informed the House that the Union Government has agreed to allocate money for Tura Medical College on a 90:10 funding pattern.

Dr. Sangma was replying to the debate on the Governor’s Address.

Pointing out that the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, Imphal, Manipur, has produced so many doctors who are working in several states of the country, the Chief Minister lamented that the State was yet to get its own engineering or medical college and was not able to arrange enough doctors to cater to the PHCs and CHCs in the State.

According to Dr. Sangma, the government has earmarked special funds for diagnostics even as he informed that the capacity of the civil hospitals in the State is being upgraded.

Speaking about the proposed Shillong Medical College and Hospital, the Chief Minister said the government has targeted to start the academic session for the first batch of students in the proposed medical college by 2017-18.
