SHILLONG: Former Chief Minister and Nongpoh legislator DD Lapang has said that the poor consumers are going through a hard time due to the lack of professionalism among the employees of MeECL.

“There is always complaint about the billing done by the MeECL. The people especially in the rural areas are receiving the electricity bills once in four or six months. It is totally unjustified for the poor consumers in the rural areas to be compelled to pay the whole amount in one go,” Lapang said while participating in the discussion on the Governor address in the Assembly on Wednesday.

He also said there is an accusation against the employees of the MeECL that they do not go to the spot to do the meter reading.

He also observed that there was a need to examine the functioning of the MeECL.

Meanwhile, the former Chief Minister favoured the setting up of more border haats along the international border to improve the economic activities of the people residing along international border.

“I would like the State Government to propose to the Center for setting up of more border haats. This would help to improve the economic activities of the people residing along the border and also lift their standard of living” Lapang said adding that “The opening of border haats is one way to reduce the illegal trading activities in the border areas”.

He also urged the State Government to take up with the Centre the issue of setting up of the hostels in various major cities to ensure the safety of the students from the State who are studying outside.
