Shillong, June 26: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi has retrieved key material evidence that investigators believe confirms a deliberate and premeditated conspiracy behind the killing.

The SIT, led by Superintendent of Police (City), East Khasi Hills, Herbert Kharkongor, revealed significant developments in the ongoing investigation.

“As per our investigation; after going through the visuals (CCTV footages), we found that they took out the bag that contained incriminating materials which matched the disclosures of the accused persons,” Kharkongor said. He further added that the contents of the bag are consistent with the statements of the accused.

“As per their statements, they disclosed that the materials were there and money amounting to Rs 50,000 was also there it is very important evidence for this investigation which implies that these people have bad intentions.”

The SIT is also probing a previously unexecuted murder plan that surfaced during the interrogation of two of the accused, Sonam and Raj. “Yes, as per Sonam and Raj they planned to murder someone and pass it off as Sonam but it never materialised because they discarded that plan,” Kharkongor disclosed.

When asked about the recovery of a firearm and whether the group had plans to target someone else, the SP clarified, “We can’t ascertain that as of now.”

On the question of motive, Kharkongor confirmed that a personal relationship was part of the picture. “Love angle is there, we are sure of that but as investigation is ongoing, we are also exploring different angles and the reasons behind the murder. We are also trying to ascertain whether there is a business angle to the entire crime.”
