JOWAI, July 7: Calling for an immediate ban on the use of plastic bags in West Jaintia Hills, the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), Jowai Circle, on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills.
In the memorandum, the organisation highlighted the severe environmental damage caused by the daily use of plastic, pointing out that it pollutes water bodies, villages, and the surrounding environment, while posing serious health risks to both humans and animals. It noted that despite ongoing awareness campaigns, the continued use of plastic bags undermines efforts to maintain a clean and sustainable environment.
In its appeal, the group urged the DC to strictly enforce regulations against plastic use and to promote awareness campaigns across schools, markets, and villages. They stressed the importance of public education on the harmful effects of plastic and advocated for the adoption of biodegradable alternatives that decompose more easily and safely.
In response, the DC assured the delegation that the matter would be taken seriously.
