SHILLONG, July 15: In a unique move to tackle the growing drug menace in Meghalaya, the state government’s flagship Drug Reduction, Elimination, and Action Mission (DREAM) has introduced a QR code to improve access to rehabilitation services and vocational training opportunities.
Speaking at a street play programme held at Motphran to raise awareness on the harmful effects of drug abuse, DREAM Mission Director Francis G Kharshiing highlighted the importance of a holistic and community-driven approach in addressing the drug crisis. Kharshiing said one of the key steps taken under the DREAM initiative is embedding a QR code in its official calendar.
According to him, this code connects individuals to information about rehabilitation centres and vocational training initiatives. He stressed that drug abuse is not just a law enforcement issue but a societal challenge that requires the active involvement of every community member.
Pointing out that many parents remain unaware that their children have fallen into drug addiction, he said, “Parents are often helpless and don’t know where to turn for support. Some are even hesitant to approach the Rangbah Shnongs for help.”
He explained that the QR code is designed to assist such parents by providing them with direct access to contact information and locations of rehab centres.
Kharshiing further appealed to two-wheeler and taxi operators to display the QR code in their vehicles so that people in need can access help more easily.
The street play was organised by Lympung Seng Kynthei in collaboration with DREAM and the U-Matter Multipurpose Society.
