SHILLONG: MSERC Chairman Anand Kumar informed that the MeECL has been directed to go for auditing of the project to be conducted by an independent expert committee and the report will be submitted in one month time and the committee will examine the cost overrun of the project.

Many consumers have objected to the high capital cost of the Myntdu Leshka Hydro Power project (MLHEP) during a public hearing which was conducted in the city recently by the Meghalaya State Electricity Regulatory Commission (MSERC)

Kumar also informed that the commission has fixed an interim tariff for the power generated from the project at Rs 2.83 per unit which is much cheaper than the rate of the power which the State is buying from other states.

The interim tariff has been fixed based on the two units which were earlier approved by the Union Government and the third unit of the project was added later way back in 2006.

The project has already been criticized owing to repeated delays in its commissioning which led to a huge cost escalation from the initial Rs 363.08 crore to Rs 1173.13 crore.
