Election dept ‘may act’ if complaint registered

SHILLONG: NPP leader James Sangma on Friday took strong exception to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s statement made on Thursday on veteran politician Purno Sangma’s decision to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The Chief Minister had termed Purno’s decision to contest the polls as a ‘dying man’s wish’.

James termed Dr Sangma as a ‘cheap minister’ who displayed the maturity of a five-year-old by making the statement.

“For a man who holds such a high position, the statement shows his lack of maturity,” James said.

Dr Sangma had also accused Purno of sacrificing the future of his children including that of Agatha Sangma to be in power and limelight.

James Sangma termed this statement of the Chief Minister as unfortunate.

Meanwhile, the state election department has said that it may act on the ‘death wish’

remark of Dr Mukul Sangma only if a complaint is lodged.

An official of the election department said on Friday that the statement of the Chief Minister appears to be hazy from the point of view of violation of model code of conduct.

“However, we will examine the matter if we receive any complaint from anyone including the NPP ,” the official added.
