SHILLONG, July 19: The State BJP has expressed concern over the use of religious sentiments by various political parties to outmanoeuvre the BJP during elections in Meghalaya. However, the party remains optimistic that the situation will change this time.
Despite making several attempts, the BJP has so far failed to secure significant victories in Meghalaya, with the majority of its candidates losing elections.
Speaking on the party’s dismal electoral performance, State BJP president M Kharkrang said, “If the BJP comes to power in Meghalaya, the state will witness the kind of development that BJP-ruled states are currently experiencing.” He added, “However, in every election, the religious card comes into play. Opposition parties try to appeal to people’s emotions, and when voters cast their votes based on emotions, it becomes quite difficult for us.”
The party has already been instructed to review and strengthen all booths and Mandals across the state. “Until the Mandals are fully activated, I don’t think it will be possible to win any elections. The BJP believes in grassroots support, and that is only possible if we have strong booths and Mandals,” Kharkrang said.
It may be noted that for decades, the BJP has managed to win only two seats in Meghalaya. Party leaders Sanbor Shullai and AL Hek have consistently won elections, regardless of the party under which they contest.
