SHILLONG, July 23: Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh on Wednesday urged Power Minister Abu Taher Mondal to address the problems faced by the people of his constituency due to frequent and prolonged power cuts.
Lyngdoh said the root cause of these disruptions appears to be the repeated damage to transformers in various localities.
According to him, even when these transformers are replaced, the new ones often malfunction or break down within a short period, causing further hardship.
“This situation has made daily life extremely difficult—particularly for students, elderly citizens, and small businesses that depend heavily on a stable electricity supply,” said the MLA.
He added that it is disheartening to see communities continue to suffer from unreliable power despite repeated requests and temporary repairs.
“In light of this, I earnestly request your kind attention and intervention to conduct a thorough assessment of the quality, capacity, and installation of the transformers being supplied,” Lyngdoh stated.
He also stressed the need to strengthen the local power infrastructure to ensure the durability and safety of the electrical distribution system.
The MLA further appealed to Minister Mondal to consider including the affected areas of his constituency under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), which aims to improve the quality and reliability of power supply in both urban and rural areas.
He recommended that the following areas be considered for inclusion under RDSS: Thangsning, Thynroit, Mawlyngot, Jongksha, Kharang, Jatah Lakdong, Nohron, Lynshing, Mawlat, and Laitkyrhong.
Lyngdoh said the implementation of the scheme in these areas would not only resolve the recurring transformer failures but also bring much-needed relief and long-term benefits to the people.
