SHILLONG: Meghalaya Acting Chief Secretary, Barkos Warjri, on Monday underlined the need to ensure that the natural resources are neither diminished nor destroyed.

Speaking at the one-day interactive seminar on “Global Practices on Sustainable Development, Green Technology & Cleantech” organised by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) in collaboration with the European Institute for Asian Studies (EIAS), Brussels, Belgium, here at Yojana Bhawan Auditorium, Warjri pointed out that the idea of sustainable development was not a new one, but the only hurdle so far has been the lack of proper implementation of the idea.

Warjri stressed on the need for sensitizing the people so that all developmental activities that Meghalaya undertakes should take care of both the people as well as the environment.

He was hopeful that the seminar would go a long way in sensitizing people on the need for sustainable development.

Alok Bhardwaj, Senior Associate, EIAS, said that corporate companies in the country must integrate economic, social and environmental development along with their growth. He was of the view that the business environment in India must be brought closer to European standards.

The day-long programme witnessed detailed discussions on the topic “CSR Practices: Need for Innovation and Professionalism” by Frank Heemskerk, Senior Associate, EIAS.

Among others, Rik Famaey, Senior Associate, EIAS, spoke on the topic “Responsible banking and Investment”.

Participants at the programme included senior Government officials, civil society members, NGOs and other stakeholders.
