‘Ardent playing petty politics’

SHILLONG: The UDP state youth wing has advised HSPDP vice president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to stop playing ‘petty politics’.

“We cannot remain silent anymore since the HSPDP vice president has been making various accusations against the UDP which is unacceptable,” UDP state youth wing vice president Hamlet Dohling told newsmen here on Tuesday.

Dohling expressed surprise at Basaiawmoit’s claims that he was made the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the KHADC on the ground that the HSPDP is the largest party from among the three coalition partners of All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA).

“Basaiawmoit would have never become the CEM without the support of the UDP. We have given unconditional support to the HSPDP to lead the EC in the KHADC with the sole objective of allowing the regional parties to rule the Council this time,” Dohling said.

The former KSU general secretary compared the present situation in the KHADC to the political situation in Delhi.

“In Delhi we had Arvind Kejriwal from the Aam Aadmi Party as the Chief Minister and in the KHADC we have Ardent Basaiawmoit as the CEM,” Dohling said, while adding that Basaiawmoit has been behaving like Kejriwal who, despite taking the support of the Congress to sit in power, continuously accused the Congress.

“I see no difference between the attitude of Basaiawmoit and Kejriwal,” Dohling said.

Dohling also expressed strong reservation over Basaiawmoit’s remarks against UDP candidate from the Shillong Parliamentary seat Paul Lyngdoh.

“It is an open secret that Basaiawmoit’s opposition to Lyngdoh’s candidature is purely a personal ego. We are all aware that both the leaders did not have a healthy relationship during their innings as NGO leaders,” Dohling said, while pointing out that Basaiawmoit had left the UDP because he was unhappy that Lyngdoh had superseded him to a higher position in the party.

“It is time for Basaiawmoit to act in a more responsible way. I think he should leave behind all his personal egos and differences and move on for the best interest of the local indigenous population,” Dohling said.

He also indicated that the UDP youth wing will attempt to bring the two leaders on a common platform to resolve all their differences and ill feelings.
