SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer P Naik has written to the Election Commission of India seeking clarification on the use of the None of the Above (NOTA) button in the EVMs during the Lok Sabha polls.
According to Naik, there is no clear cut direction from the Election Commission on the declaration of the winning candidate if the votes polled under NOTA outnumber the votes of other candidates.
Clarification has also been sought on whether a lone candidate who is in the fray can be declared elected unopposed if the NOTA option is made available in the EVMs, Naik said, adding that he wrote the letter on Tuesday seeking clarifications from the Commission over these doubts.
