London, Aug 3: Joe Root added yet another landmark to his illustrious Test career as he became the first cricketer to surpass 6,000 runs in the history of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The milestone came during England’s second innings on Day 4 of the fifth and final Test against India at The Oval.
Displaying his trademark grace and calm under pressure, Root reached the historic figure in his 69th WTC Test, further cementing his place as one of the modern greats of the game. His composed knock during England’s pursuit of a steep 374-run target underscored his reputation as a man for all seasons — and all situations. With this achievement, the former England captain leads the all-time WTC run-scorers’ chart with a commanding 6,000-plus tally, well ahead of Australia’s Steve Smith (4,278), Marnus Labuschagne (4,225), England’s Ben Stokes (3,616), and Travis Head (3,300). Root’s WTC record also includes 20 centuries and 23 fifties — a staggering level of consistency.
Against India, Root has now scored 16 fifty-plus scores — a figure matched only by New Zealand’s Ross Taylor against England. The legendary Don Bradman holds the all-time record with 17 such scores against England. (Agencies)
