SHILLONG, Aug 3: The first academic session of the Shillong Campus of the Captain Williamson Sangma State University is expected to commence shortly after August 15, with temporary arrangements being made at the Shillong Engineering College (SEC), Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma said on Sunday.
Providing an update on the preparations for the academic session, Sangma said admissions are currently under way for three of the four departments being offered in the Shillong campus—English, Commerce, Khasi, and Social Work.
He said some of the rooms at the Shillong Engineering College (SEC) will be used on a temporary basis to run the various classes.
He pointed out that there is adequate space on the SEC premises to run the classes.
Asked to specify the likely date for the start of the academic session, Sangma responded, “Within August, maybe right after August 15, we will start the classes.”
Regarding the admission response, the Education Minister noted a robust turnout at the university’s Tura campus.
“There is heavy rush for admission at the Tura campus and we are expecting a full house in the Shillong campus also,” he said, adding that data collection is still on for admission sought in the Shillong campus.
Initially, the government had proposed to temporarily house the Shillong campus at the Bijni Complex. However, this plan faced legal resistance from the Registrar of the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), who moved the High Court of Meghalaya against the decision.
Following this, the state government began identifying alternate locations, including a proposal to set up a permanent campus at New Shillong Township.
