‘Need to improve agricultural scenario’

SHILLONG: Dr S Ayyappan, Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary DARE, New Delhi urged for a concerted effort to improve agricultural scenario in the region even as he emphasized on the need to adopt improved technologies for conservation of natural resources (Soil & Water) to enhance agricultural productivity.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, West Garo Hills organized an “Agriculture Exhibition cum showcasing of farm innovation” in Tura on Wednesday.

Dr. S. Ayyappan, Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and Secretary DARE, , New Delhi graced the function as chief guest. More than 500 farmers from different corners of Garo Hills participated in the programme.

Altogether, there were 17 stalls in the exhibition covering ICAR, KVKs, financial institutes, line departments and NGOs.

Various innovative technologies on crop production, horticulture, livestock farming, fishery, and value addition along with farm mechanization were showcased in the programme.

Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam in his welcome address briefed about the various research and extension activities of ICAR and KVK, Tura.
