Govt initiates land acquisition in Ri-Bhoi for high-speed corridor

SHILLONG, Aug 4: The state government through the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has initiated the process of acquiring land for the proposed four-lane high-speed corridor on a greenfield alignment which is proposed to pass through various villages in Ri-Bhoi district.
The villages where land acquisition will be required are Pyllun, Umeit, Umroi Labansaro, Nongrah, Nonglakhia, Wahmyntait, Sumer Umbang, Umdohbyrthih, Syllei U Lar, Umktieh, Umsarang, Lumsohpetbneng, Umroi Madan, Umsawriang, Lumdaitkhla, and Lumsohphoh.
Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal in a statement on Monday said that the general public is hereby informed that any new construction or development activity within the designated areas of the proposed four-lane greenfield alignment high-speed corridor must obtain prior permission from the office of the deputy commissioner.
“It is hereby clearly stated that any unauthorised structures whether temporary or permanent erected within the proposed alignment after the issuance of the notice will not be considered eligible for any compensation at the time of land acquisition or project implementation,” he said.
The high-speed corridor is planned to connect Umiam in Meghalaya to Silchar in Assam. This four-lane corridor, estimated to cost Rs 22,864 crore, aims to improve connectivity and boost economic development in the region. The 166.80-km four-lane corridor will stretch from Mawlyngkhung near Shillong to Panchgram near Silchar, with 144.80 km of the road in Meghalaya and 22 km in Assam.
