City event marks National Remote Sensing Day

SHILLONG, Aug 10: The Indian Society of Remote Sensing (ISRS), Shillong Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Geography and IQAC, St. Edmund’s College, organised an event on Saturday to celebrate National Remote Sensing ( Day.
ISRS president Dr SP Aggarwal, who was the chief guest, launched the webinar series by ISRS Shillong Chapter and NESAC, and delivered an inspiring speech underlining India’s key milestones in space exploration.
The first half of the event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rekha Gogoi from NESAC, followed by the St. Edmund’s College anthem sung by third-semester students. A cultural performance by the third-semester Geography students added a vibrant touch to the celebration.
The second session began after a tea break, featuring presentations by Dr Victor Saikhom on ‘Unleashing the Potential of UAV Technology for Societal Benefits’, Dr KK Sarma on ‘Geospatial Ecosystem Advancements: Transforming Deforestation Surveillance and Reforestation Strategies’ and Prof. Sunil Kumar De on ‘Professional Opportunities and Future Prospects in Geospatial Sciences’. The talks aimed to inspire students and highlight career opportunities in the field.
Following the presentations, an interactive Q&A session engaged both students and faculty. Special spice gift boxes were presented to the speakers, and NESAC felicitated the faculty of St. Edmund’s College’s Geography Department.
A quiz competition, moderated by the NESAC team, saw St. Anthony’s College, Shillong, secure first place, St. Edmund’s Higher Secondary School take second, and St. Edmund’s College finish third.
The day concluded with a prize distribution, a vote of thanks by Prof. Mark J. Ford, Head of the Geography Department, and a group photograph.
The programme was hosted by Prof. Gideon Kharkongor, who also welcomed dignitaries and guests, sharing the significance of the day and facilitating the felicitation of honoured guests with mementos, shawls and rocket models.
