Tura: Young Congress candidate at Tura Lok Sabha seat Daryl William Momin is engaged in a high profile campaign led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma.
Though the Chief Minister and Momin have not shared space for campaigning together, the youth icon is not left out. He is making an attempt to introduce himself, along with party functionaries, legislators and district council members in rural areas.
27-year-old Momin is making short speeches and is trying to connect to voters. Besides addressing about four to five campaign meetings in a day, he is spending meaningful time with youths.
Addressing a campaign at Kherapara in West Garo Hills, Momin said, “I will not promise anything. I know you have heard enough of promises, all these years. I seek your vote for change. Together, we can make things happen”.
There were critics, who had said that Momin will not be able to connect with people. For, he had studied outside Tura, passed out his graduation from St. Xavier’s Calcutta and MBA from Bond University in Australia.
Though Momin had seemed visibly nervous during his initial campaigning, but he gained ground. He is speaking local Garo language to make his voice heard, that too, loud and clear.
Without naming his rival, veteran politician Purno Sangma, Momin said, “You voted for one person all these years. Give me a chance to lead you, so that other side of the coin can be tested. I assure to work for change”.
In the run-up to the April 9 polling Congress has begun to put up hoardings and posters of Momin with first chief minister of Meghalaya, Williamson Sangma, Momin’s grandfather, who is aptly branded as the father of the state. Momin is banking on the legacy of his grandfather. There are also giant hoardings in Tura, which shows Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.
