New Delhi, Aug 11: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) allrounder R Ashwin has approached the franchise for clarity over his role in the upcoming IPL 2026 season, with sources telling ESPNcricinfo that he is open to parting ways if he is not part of their long-term plans.
The 37-year-old, bought for INR 9.75 crore at last year’s mega auction, featured in just nine of CSK’s 14 matches this season — his fewest appearances since his debut year in 2009. Despite the move being billed as a homecoming after eight years with other franchises, Ashwin endured a challenging campaign, conceding runs at 9.12 per over — the highest economy rate of his IPL career.
The timing of any player release will hinge on when the IPL 2026 auction is scheduled, which is yet to be confirmed. Mega auctions occur every three years, with mini auctions in between, usually held between November and February. Player trades, Ashwin noted, can be completed up to a week before the auction.Speaking on his YouTube show, Ashwin referenced his stint with Rajasthan Royals and stressed the importance of communication between teams and players:“After every season, it’s the responsibility of the franchise to tell the player if they’re retaining or releasing him. Every player seeks clarity. As things stand, it’s not in my hands — I’ve just asked for it.”Ashwin, the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history, began his career with CSK before stints at Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, returning to Chennai in 2025.
