SHILLONG, Aug 11: The collapsed retaining wall along the Umkhrah River at Lawmali Pyllun Block-2 has been posing a serious risk to vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, especially during night hours. The wall reportedly gave way over a month ago, believed to be due to heavy water flow and pressure from the PHE’s blue pipelines of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme Phase-III.
Residents have said that bamboo barricades placed at the site were dislodged after being hit by two-wheelers, resulting in several accidents.
Concerned for public safety, the Dorbar Shnong of Lawmali Pyllun has taken up the matter with North Shillong MLA Adelbert Nongrum.
An inspection was subsequently carried out by the MLA, along with PHE and PWD officials. However, PWD officials expressed their inability to undertake immediate repairs due to the heavy water flow.
Meanwhile, the residents have voiced frustration that, despite the danger, no proper barricade has been installed to prevent accidents. They have also questioned whether the authorities plan to act only after a serious mishap occurs.
