SHILLONG: At a time when the State Government is going all out to promote tourism sector of the state, the Pamphyrnai lake situated around  10 kilometer from Nongstoin at Ksehkohlong village is coming up up as a hot spot for tourists visiting the state.

The picturesque lake was developed by the then Deputy Commissioner of West Khasi Hills KL Tariang with an aim to provide recreation and to encourage tourism.

Nestled between hillocks, the total area of the lake is about 2.2 hectares which is about three times the size of Wards Lake and the average depth is about 12 ft.

The lake is presently managed by a local Self Help Group which took it on lease from the land owner on a negotiated annual payment. However, the lake which has the potential to become a major tourist destination lacks the attention of the concerned authorities in further redefining its beauty.

According to officials, the Tourism Department has not taken any interest in the project and the Self Help Group has no resources to further expand its development.

The officials also say that the Fishery Department at the most has come forward to release fish seedlings  in the lake which help the group to earn some income from the organized fishing competitions.

Despite all the odds, the lake has managed to attract many local visitors and a Tourism festival is also being organized by the group every year. The lake is also a favorite picnic spot for the old and young alike.

The lake can be another attractive tourist package for tourists who visit Nongkhnum river island. Moreover, the proposed Shillong –Nongstoin-Tura Highway will be constructed through the same stretch, so the lake can turn out to be a refreshing stop for travelers moving on the particular route.
