Terror attacks in Pak: 5 cops killed, 8 injured
PESHAWAR, Aug 14: A series of terrorist attacks targeting police stations and check posts in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province have resulted in the deaths of at least five police personnel and eight others injured. The attacks took place on Wednesday, with a police constable killed and another injured. In Upper Dir, terrorists ambushed a Quick Response Force vehicle, killing three policemen and injuring eight others. In Lower Dir, two separate terrorist attacks on police checkpoints claimed the life of one police constable. In the Khyber district, militants attacked the joint Frontier Corps-police checkpoint at the Sakhi Pul, but were repelled after a robust retaliatory response. Similar attacks were foiled in Nasir Bagh and Mattani areas. In Bannu, militants targeted the Mazangha check post within Hovid Police Station limits, but no casualties were reported. The country has witnessed an uptick in terror activities over the past year, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ending its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. Climber’s body recovery under way on K2 peak
PESHAWAR, Aug 14: Chinese climber Guan Jing died while descending K2, the world’s second-highest peak, in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The mountain is known for its treacherous slopes, frequent rockfalls, and extreme weather conditions. Jing was part of an expedition organized by a Nepali company. The Nepali Sherpa, Jangbu, was sent to recover her body but was injured on the way and stranded. He was later rescued by helicopter and transferred to Skardu Hospital. Deadly incidents are common on K2, where steep gradients, thin air, and sudden storms can turn even routine descents into life-threatening ordeals. The latest death comes two weeks after German mountaineer Laura Dahlmeier died while attempting another peak in the region. Efforts to retrieve her body were abandoned when Dahlmeier’s family informed authorities that she had stated that no one should risk their life to recover her body if she dies in any accident. (PTI)
