SHILLONG, Aug 14: With arms not stretched out for presents but with his hands full of them, South Shillong MLA Sanbor Shullai celebrated his 58th birthday far from the trappings of luxury, in the warm company of the children and staff of The Home in Nongshiliang, Nongthymmai.
The celebration was simple yet full of heart. The Home’s Director, Rev. Fr. James Thyrniang, joined the children in the singing, while staff members and children surrounded Shullai before sharing slices of cake together. True to the spirit of the day, he did not take home any gifts; instead, he made sure each child and guest left with one.
When he learned the Home dreamed of having a basketball court, Shullai promised, without hesitation, Rs 7 lakh from his own pocket to make it happen.
His pledge drew smiles and applause, but he brushed it off with quiet conviction, saying that since childhood he had never spent “tens of thousands” on dancing, drinking, or lavish birthdays. “I feel it is far better to contribute towards the needs of others rather than spending on grand celebrations,” he told the gathering.
As the afternoon wound down, the hall filled again with music soulful singing, the soft whistle of tunes, and the kind of unpolished melodies that speak straight to the heart.
Under the canopy of umbrellas, the celebration stood apart from the usual birthday scenes of excess. It was a day stitched together with generosity, laughter, and the rare beauty of a leader who chose to celebrate by giving more than he received.
