Vermont Mountain Park celebrates human-dog bond
St Johnsbury (US), Aug 17: Dog Mountain, a 150-acre sanctuary nestled in the hills of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, has become a cherished destination for dog lovers seeking to celebrate the deep bond they share with their pets. Created 25 years ago by Vermont folk artist Stephen Huneck and his wife, Gwen, the park features hiking trails, swimming ponds, an art gallery, and its heart—The Dog Chapel.
The chapel is a quiet, emotional space filled with thousands of photos and handwritten notes from visitors commemorating their beloved animals. Anne Pace, visiting with her one-year-old border collie Tam, said she had long wanted to see the park and came to leave a note for her late dog. “He was my best buddy,” she said.
Huneck, inspired by his own dogs—especially his black lab, Sally—built Dog Mountain as a place where people could reflect, grieve, and celebrate their pets. His artwork is found throughout the property, including carved pews and stained-glass windows in the chapel featuring Sally. The gallery also showcases his sculptures, prints, and furniture, all honoring the joy animals bring to life.
Visitors like Vanessa Hurley from Ohio, who came with her husband and two dogs, were moved by the outpouring of love displayed in the chapel. “That’s a lot of love when you think about each picture that’s here,” she said.
Scott and Julie Ritchie, traveling the U.S. in an RV with their three large dogs, said Dog Mountain was one of the most unique places they’ve visited in months on the road. They were so touched by the experience that they returned the next day. “Just a beautiful area,” Scott said.
Pam McCann, the gallery manager, says Dog Mountain is more than a park—it’s a sanctuary. “It’s really a pilgrimage place… made for people who care deeply and are connected to the animals they are guardians of,” she said.
Dog Mountain remains a living tribute to the human-animal connection, welcoming all who want to explore nature, enjoy art, or simply honor the love of a dog. Its peaceful grounds offer comfort, reflection, and a powerful reminder of the joy pets bring into our lives. (AP)
