NONGPOH, Aug 18: The Traffic Branch of Nongpoh Police on Monday carried out a special drive against auto-rickshaws plying without proper documents in the town.
The inspection was conducted along the National Highway 6 near Bethany Hospital, led by Officer-in-Charge of Traffic, Rubul Ali, along with traffic officers and personnel from Nongpoh Police Station.
During the drive, police found that a large number of auto rickshaws were being operated without valid licences or vehicle documents, with some drivers running their vehicles without any paperwork at all. Many auto rickshaw operators were fined on the spot and issued challan for violating traffic rules as per the Motor Vehicles Act.
Speaking to the media, Traffic Officer-in-Charge Rubul Ali said the checking was carried out not only to enforce compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act but also to create awareness among drivers on the importance of carrying proper documents. “Many of the drivers were found without licences or vehicle papers, which poses a serious risk to commuters’ safety. Action has been taken against the violators,” he stated.
He added that the police will continue such drives in Nongpoh to ensure passenger safety and to curb the practice of operating without valid permits and licences.
