SHILLONG, Aug 21: Calling for a more compassionate approach towards street dogs, the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma urging the government to adopt a structured policy for their welfare.
In her communication, MSCPCR chairperson Agatha K Sangma lauded the chief minister’s concern over the issue but said that a systemic framework was required to ensure long-term care and coexistence.
The Commission also suggested the creation of designated feeding points, awareness campaigns and sustained sterilisation and vaccination programmes for the stray dogs.
It also drew attention to national initiatives such as the Animal Birth Control (ABC) scheme and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, which provide the legal foundation for addressing stray dog concerns.
“We believe that Meghalaya can become a model state that embodies the spirit of ahimsa and co-existence,” Agatha K Sangma said, exhorting the government to move forward with clear measures to instil a culture of compassion in the state.
