SHILLONG, Aug 21: The Synjuk Nongsynshar Shnong Upper Shillong (SNSUS) has expressed dissatisfaction over the slow pace and poor quality of work being carried out by the NHIDCL, despite a joint inspection earlier with district authorities, the Synjuk, NHIDCL, and other concerned departments.
The Synjuk convened an emergent meeting on Thursday at the Nongkseh community hall to deliberate on the delay in Phase I of the Shillong-Dawki four-lane road project, covering the stretch from Umshyrpi Bridge to 7th Mile, Umdiengpun.
SNSUS general secretary MR Thangkhiew said the Synjuk has decided that during the dismantling of the retaining wall near Umshyrpi Bridge, proper safety measures must be ensured to protect residents and pedestrians. “Moreover, the work should not affect the existing road or cause major traffic congestion,” Thangkhiew stressed.
He further cautioned that dismantling should not damage the water reservoir of Lummawbah village, located at the foot of the wall, nor endanger people who collect drinking water or wash clothes at the nearby washing shed.
Referring to the joint inspection conducted on June 17, Thangkhiew reminded that NHIDCL had assured the Synjuk that potholes along the stretch from Umshyrpi Bridge to 7th Mile, Umdiengpun, would be repaired within 20 days to ease traffic.
“However, till date, no action has been taken,” he added.
Thangkhiew also pointed out that the road condition from Umshyrpi Bridge, 4th Mile link road, 5th Mile junction, up to 7th Mile, Umdiengpun, is extremely poor, leading to frequent vehicle breakdowns and massive traffic jams that cause severe inconvenience to the public.
He further highlighted that link roads to nearby villages, earlier identified as requiring urgent attention, have been neglected—creating hardships for local residents, particularly students and traders.
