Guwahati: The influential All Assam Students Union (AASU) and state education minister are on a war path on the issue of whether school students wearing uniforms can join agitations.

Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently announced that school headmasters will be held responsible in the event of students wearing uniforms bunking classes and join agitation outside the school.

At a function, the minister warned of “serious steps” if their students are found taking part in agitations during school timings.

Irked over the diktat, the AASU reacted strongly by claiming that this amounted to violation of the democratic rights of the students.

“This is nothing but a blatant attempt to curb the rights of the students to fight for their rights and privileges,” feels AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharjee.

“As long as there are problems the students will take to the streets whether it is within the school hours or not and the education minister is trying to impose and curb people’s right to fight for justice”, he said. (PTI)
