MAWKYRWAT, Aug 26: Reports of illegal entry of international gangs from across the Bangladesh border has instilled fear among residents of the Khonjoy-Maheshkhola area under Ranikor Civil Sub-Division in South West Khasi Hills.
According to official sources, on Monday, around 9:30 am, two residents of Nongjri village were travelling in a gypsy along the Koraibari shortcut road leading to Maheshkhola when they heard a loud sound resembling a gunshot from the nearby jungle. Startled, they immediately fled the area and reported the matter at Nonghyllam Police Station.
Police teams from Nonghyllam Police Station and Borsora check post promptly rushed to the site and conducted a search, but nothing was found. Sources confirmed that no one was injured in the incident. During the investigation, police also noted that there were no bullet marks on the vehicle. They are now working to establish the actual cause of the reported sound.
Meanwhile, villagers said the incident may have been triggered by something else. However, fear has persisted in the area following recent attacks by Bangladeshi gangs, which likely led the two men to suspect they were under attack.
