Indian boxers secure 26 medals in China youth meet
NEW DELHI, Aug 28: Indian boxers ensured 26 medals at the 3rd “Belt and Road” International Youth Boxing Gala — U17/U19/U23 International Training Camp & Tournament in Xinjiang, China.India have sent a 58-member contingent comprising 20 boys and 20 girls only in under-17 age group.The semifinalists include Dhruv Kharb (46kg), Uday Singh (46kg), Falak (48kg), Piyush (50kg), Aditya (52kg), Udham Singh Raghav (54kg), Ashish (54kg), Devendra Chaudhary (75kg), Jaideep Singh Hanjra (80kg), and Loven Gulia (+80kg) who defeated tough opponents from China, Korea, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan to ensure at least a medal.The Indian junior girls also dominated the ring with emphatic victories.Khushi (46kg), Bhakti (50kg), Radhamani (60kg), Harsika (60kg), Diya (66kg), Priya (66kg), Laxmi (46kg), Chahat (60kg), Himanshi (66kg), Harnoor (66kg), and Prachi Khatri (+80kg) all secured wins against tough opponents from China and Korea to assure themselves a medal. Squash: Anahat completes hat-trick of national titles
NEW DELHI, Aug 28: Top seed Anahat Singh breezed her way to a third successive title in the HCL National Squash Championships with a win over Akansha Salunkhe, while Velavan Senthilkumar reclaimed the domestic crown by beating the defending champion Abhay Singh here on Thursday.The 17-year-old Anahat, India’s highest ranked female player in the world, completed a hat-trick of titles with a 11-7, 11-6, 11-4 win over second seed Salunkhe.Salunkhe had downed veteran Joshna Chinappa in the semifinals.Anahat had finished runners-up in 2022 before topping the following three editions, reaffirming her supremacy in the country.In the men’s final, Velavan defeated Abhay 11-8, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8 to reclaim the national title.It was Velavan’s second national title following his win in 2023. The win was made sweeter as he avenged his loss to Abhay in the last two finals. (PTI)
Mallavarapu knocks out Negi in India junior badminton
PUNE, Aug 28: Unseeded Haasana Sree Mallavarapu defeated top seed Ishita Negi 22-20, 21-18 to enter the girls’ singles second round of Late Sushant Chipalkatti India Junior International Grand Prix Badminton Tournament here on Thursday.Dianka Waldia upset eighth seeded Tanvi Reddy Andluri 21-15, 21-19 while Rishika Nandi edged out 13th seeded Tanvi Patri 21-14, 14-21, 21-8.As many as six upsets were recorded in the boys singles as well. Jagsher Singh Khangurra got the better of UAE’s Riyan Malhan 21-18, 21-19, whereas Japan’s Yuzuno Watanabe beat the fifth seeded Xiao-Ting Su of Chinese Taipei 21-18, 21-12 to move into the next round.India’s Dev Ruparelia knocked out the 13th seeded Toshiki Nishio of Japan 23-25, 21-19, 21-9 to record a hard fought win. The other players to cause upsets on Thursday included Mithes Rameshwaran, Tankara Gnana Dattu Talasila and Anish Thoppani. (PTI)
