Bengal BJP leader held for ‘vandalising’ Congress headquarters

KOLKATA, Sep 3: BJP leader Rakesh Singh has been arrested for allegedly being involved in vandalising the Congress’ West Bengal unit headquarters here, police said on Wednesday.Singh, who had been absconding since the attack on the Bidhan Bhavan on August 29, was apprehended from a housing complex in Tangra area of the city.“We arrested him on Tuesday night from Tangra in connection with the attack on the Congress office. The accused will be produced before the court on Wednesday,” he said.Singh was seen “engaging in the act of vandalising the Congress office”, he said.During the attack, cutouts of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other senior party functionaries were defaced, and its flags were torn, the police said.The Kolkata Police have arrested several individuals, but Singh remained untraceable. ”While in hiding, Rakesh Singh released a video clip threatening the police and launched a verbal attack on West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Two days after the release of that video, he was arrested,” the police added. (PTI)

UP cops suspended for burying beef, hiding car to shield smugglers

MORADABAD, Sep 3: Ten policemen, including a SHO, have been suspended in Moradabad for allegedly attempting to cover up a case of beef smuggling by burying meat and hiding a car instead of reporting the incident to senior officers.According to officials, the episode unfolded late on Monday night when a UP-112 police team intercepted a suspicious Honda City car. On inspection, large quantities of beef were allegedly found in the vehicle.Instead of escalating the matter, the policemen allegedly dug a pit to bury the seized meat and moved the car to another location.A Special Operations Group team, with veterinary experts, exhumed the buried meat and confirmed it was beef. Following confirmation, the SSP immediately suspended all involved officers and personnel.The car, registered in the name of Mohammad Shami of Mohalla Sadat in Kundarki, has been seized. (PTI)
