SHILLONG, Sep 4: BJP leader and Cabinet Minister AL Hek on Thursday asserted that the party has the potential to secure up to 40 Assembly seats in Meghalaya, expressing confidence of winning at least 20-30 seats in the 2028 elections. He emphasised that electoral success in the state depends not only on the party’s strength but also on the quality of candidates fielded. Earlier, the party had claimed it could win at least 25 seats in the 2028 polls.
Meanwhile, Hek sought to distance the BJP from recent attacks on Christians across the country by right-wing groups, stating that the party is not involved in such incidents. He maintained that these acts were carried out by other groups with no links to the BJP, and stressed that the party would not be affected as it does not indulge in atrocities against Christians.
He further asserted that the BJP has not acted against any community, whether Hindus, Christians, Muslims, or others.
On the GHADC salary crisis, Hek defended Tura MDC Bernard Marak’s move to seek the intervention of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, saying there was nothing wrong in bypassing the state BJP leadership.
