Shillong, Sep 4: The Khasi National Dorbar (KND) celebrated the 102nd anniversary of the historic day that united the 25 Khasi states on September 4, 1923, as the British prepared to leave India.
The historic meeting had taken place in Shillong, where people from across the Khasi Hills came together to decide their future.
KND president Laborious Syiem highlighted the importance of the day, stating that it marked the transition from individual states to a united entity.
The meeting also led to the formation of the Federation of Khasi States, which aimed to demand inclusion in the First Schedule of the Indian Constitution, he said.
However, after India accepted the Khasi states into the Union in 1948, they were reduced from sovereign states to a Sixth Schedule area.
Syiem emphasised that the Khasi National Dorbar never gave up its aspirations and continued to strive for statehood.
He also reminded the Dorbar of the responsibility to preserve the legacy of their forefathers, stressing on the importance of remembering and passing it on to the next generation.
