SHILLONG, Sep 6: East Khasi Hills District Magistrate RM Kurbah has prohibited bull fights and other forms of animal fights across the district, citing violations of animal cruelty laws and a Supreme Court ruling.
According to a statement here, the order was prompted by reports of rampant animal fighting, particularly during fetes and festivals in parts of the district. Kurbah said such practices violate Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and contravene the Supreme Court’s 2014 judgment banning bullfighting.
Meanwhile, the district magistrate warned that any violation of the order would be dealt with strictly under the law.
The order has come into immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice.
