Buenos Aires, Sep 6: Lionel Messi has once again left his international future shrouded in uncertainty after penning an emotional message following what could have been his final appearance for Argentina on home soil.
The 38-year-old talisman struck twice in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Venezuela in their penultimate World Cup qualifier on Thursday, but his words after the game hinted at the possibility that the 2026 World Cup may not feature the country’s greatest-ever player.
Messi, who famously lifted the trophy in Qatar three years ago, has consistently avoided committing to playing in the next edition, which will be staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Instead, he has maintained a cautious stance, refusing to confirm whether he will defend Argentina’s crown at the tournament. His latest Instagram post deepened the sense of ambiguity. “A very special night that still leaves me speechless with emotion. Heartfelt thanks to all the people for the love and for always supporting us. Whatever happens and whatever the future holds, only God knows… LET’S GO ARGENTINA!” wrote the Inter Miami forward. Adding further intrigue, Messi has opted to sit out Argentina’s final qualifier against Ecuador next week in order to manage his fitness for club commitments. While Argentina’s supporters continue to hope their captain extends his international journey to 2026, Messi’s carefully chosen words suggest that only time will reveal whether he will grace the World Cup stage one last time.
