Call to probe delayed SWGH college projects

AMPATI, Sep 7: The Niksamso Garo Community Organisation (NGCO) has raised strong objections over the non-completion of the Mahendraganj Science and Commerce College and the Ampati Engineering College in South West Garo Hills (SWGH), which were sanctioned under central funds in 2017 through the NLCPR but remain incomplete till date.
In a letter to the chief minister and the education minister, the NGCO demanded the constitution of an inquiry commission to investigate the reasons behind the delay and why over 85% of the sanctioned funds had been released to the contractor despite minimal progress on the ground.
The SWGH projects were sanctioned under the Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) in 2017. The Mahendraganj project was sanctioned at Rs 36.31 crore, with more than Rs 30 crore already disbursed. The Ampati project, meanwhile, was sanctioned at over Rs 41 crore.
It is pertinent to note that the organisation’s complaint follows site visits to both ongoing projects. “The quality of construction in both project sites is extremely bad and needs to be rectified. It has been 8 years but the projects are far from complete. For a region that has always lacked good quality institutions, these two projects would have been a boon but thanks to the lack of intent, both remain stuck in limbo,” said NGCO president Tengrak Marak.
According to the organisation, both projects were entrusted to a single company, BSS, by the state government.
The organisation maintained that the delay was inexcusable and inordinate, and therefore demanded an immediate inquiry along with action against those responsible.
