Govt hard-pressed to maintain peace in Garo Hills

SHILLONG: In what could be a cause of worry for the State Government, the Centre has decided to deploy 50 companies less of Central paramilitary forces for the April 9 election as compared to the 2013 Assembly polls in the State.
The downsizing of the security deployment in the State could be a potential headache for the State Government in maintaining law and order in the disturbed Garo Hills region especially in view of the deteriorating scenario in the area in the run up to the elections.
During the 2013 Assembly polls, the Centre had deployed as many as 90 companies of Central paramilitary forces, whereas this time the State had got only 40 companies to tackle any law and order eventuality.
The retrenchment of the paramilitary forces was discussed by police officials and deputy commissioners of all the districts in Garo Hill region, at a recent review meeting.
There has been a spurt in violence perpetrated by militants in Garo Hills. A series of abduction cases were reported in these areas recently. Though the ANVC and its breakaway faction (ANVC-B) are waiting for the final peace pact, while the GNLA has expressed its desire to hold talks with the Government, the activities of splinter groups remain unpredictable as they are yet to agree to come to the negotiation table.
An official, however, said that the Government was committed to ensuring law and order with the existing strength of security forces.
