SHILLONG: Around 50 technical advisors working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) in East Garo Hills have resented their last-minute appointment as official videographers for the Lok Sabha elections 2014.

One of the technical advisors called up The Shillong Times and claimed that there was a sudden announcement of their appointment as videographers without any Election Duty Certificate (EDC) being issued to them.

“We have been appointed suddenly and now we will be deprived of our rights to vote,” the caller said, while adding that around 50 technical advisors have been appointed as videographers.

When contacted, East Garo Hills Election Returning Officer Commissioner Vijay Kumar Mantri said that the persons who have been appointed as videographers can apply for Election Duty Certificate after which they can cast their votes in the respective polling stations where they have been assigned.

Mantri also informed that the election process in 87 out of 132 polling stations in East Garo Hills would be videographed due to the sensitivity of the area in terms of militancy.

It is learnt that the General Observer of the district has asked the Deputy Commissioner to record the entire election proceedings and a request in this regard has been sent to the State Chief Election Officer.
