TURA: Campaigning ended on a peaceful note on Monday evening for the Tura Lok Sabha constituency which goes to the polls in the second phase on April 9th .

The last day of campaign by the two contestants — Congress’s Daryl William Cheran Momin and NPP’s Purno Agitok Sangma — centred around Tura town, with both candidates deciding to end their long haul of travel in the second most important town after Shillong having toured the length and breadth of the five districts in western Meghalaya.

The NPP’s Purno A Sangma, who is hoping to make it to Parliament for the tenth consecutive time from Tura concluded his election season with a public meeting at the main Tura bazaar on Monday afternoon.

His opponent from the Congress undertook a motorcycle rally from Tura to Asanang and back with young Congress supporters raising slogans asking the people to vote for their candidate Daryl William Cheran Momin.

Dozens of Congress supporters on two wheelers carrying flags and posters of Congress travelled through the main thoroughfares of Tura just before noon raising the campaign pitch just before electioneering came to a close.

On the other hand, the veteran politician from this region made an appeal to voters during his public meeting at the main market seeking their vote to return him to Parliament once again. He spoke at length on his plans for Garo Hills if elected.

Meanwhile, hundreds of government employees, teachers, district council staff moved out from Tura, Williamnagar, Baghmara, Ampati and Resubelpara with security personnel and the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to their designated polling stations two days ahead of the polls.
