New Delhi: Import of coal through six land customs (LC) stations in Sylhet region on the Indo-Bangladesh border has remained suspended from this month as the exporters from Meghalaya and Assam have stopped exporting coal following the Centre’s decision to raise excise duty.
The suspension of import from April 1 this year has left around 30,000 labourers jobless at the land customs stations of the region, sources said on Tuesday.
Two teams of coal importers from Bangladesh are in India for a negotiated settlement and resumption of the coal export, it added.
They will hold talks with Karimganj District Exporter and Importers Association and Assam Exporters and Importers Association to resolve the crisis, sources added.
Around 20 lakh tonnes of coal are imported through the six LC stations in Sylhet region- Tamabil, Sheola, Barchhara, Bagli, and Bholaganj and Charagaon every year.
