SHILLONG: Candidates for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat are making claims and counter claims on their respective chances after the end of polling on Wednesday.
Sitting MP and Congress nominee Vincent H Pala exuded confidence that he was going to be re-elected for the second time.
“The margin of victory would not be a huge one like in the previous election,” Pala said.
He, however, admitted that both UDP nominee Paul Lyngdoh and independent candidate PBM Basaiawmoit have managed to make an inroad in Jaintia Hills.
“But this would not all affect his prospect of winning the seat,” the sitting MP said.
UDP candidate Paul Lyngdoh said that he had high hopes of winning, given the anti-Congress wave and the formidable presence of the party in all districts of Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
“I also expect the people would eventually vote in my favour on the basis of my age, education and my vast experience in the public life,” Lyngdoh added.
The State BJP general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said that the party got only 22 days to campaign for its candidate.
“But the strong organizations of the party units in many of the constituencies have enabled us to put up a good fight. We are confident to win, considering the anti-Congress waves and the Narendra Modi factor,” Chakraborty said.
