Urban voters more active than Rural

SHILLONG: The voters’ turnout in the urban constituencies for Shillong Parliamentary constituency have shown signs of improvement as most of the urban Assembly segments in East Khasi Hills recorded over 60 percent turnout.

The Pynthorumkhrah segment recorded 67.18 voters’ turnout while Mawlai recorded the lowest turnout at 52.78 percent.

East Shillong constituency recorded a 62.91 percent turnout while North Shillong recorded 61.32 percent voter turnout.

West Shillong constituency recorded a 68.62 percent voting while South Shillong recorded 65.86 percent voting.

Nongthymmai constituency which is located in the heart of the city recorded 60.15 voting.

On the other hand, many of the rural constituencies under Shillong Parliamentary constituency failed to cross over 60 percent voting.

Shella constituency recorded 53.21 voting while Pynursula constituency also recorded a low of mere 52.65 percent turnout out.

The wettest place on the earth ‘Sohra’ constituency also recorded 55.38 percent voting whereas Mawkynrew witnessed 59.66 percent voting.

Mairang constituency fared well as it recorded 60.52 percent voting while Mawthadraishan recorded 59.72 percent voting.

Chief Electoral Officer P Naik however is happy for that the fact there has been a slight improvement of about 10 percent in rural voting in the State even as he hoped that the numbers would only increase in coming years.

When asked for a solution to increase the voting turnout in the State, Naik opined that there should be biometric card for voters and counters should be opened up like ATMs and voters should be given a time period of two to three days to cast their votes.
