TURA, Sep 22: NEHU Tura Campus’s long-standing institutional and financial crisis has prompted the Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) of NEHU to turn to Governor CH Vijayashankar for a solution.
In a statement issued here on Monday, the student body called upon the Governor to step in urgently and implement solid action to end the crisis.
“We cannot jeopardize the academic future of thousands of students. This is not only an institutional matter but also a humanitarian one. Students are being denied the dignity and rights they deserve as members of a flagship university. This is a call to action toward stability, dignity, and a thriving educational environment for our campus community,” the union stated.
According to the union, without urgent financial support and administrative reforms, the NEHU Tura Campus is at risk of losing its purpose and legacy. “The crisis has already eroded the confidence of students, parents, and faculty. If left unaddressed, it could permanently damage the future of higher education in the Garo Hills region,” it added.
Various problems faced by the campus, as per the union includes poor infrastructure with five academic departments functioning without classrooms, lack of clean drinking water, hostel facilities, laboratories, and transport services, while staff quarters had to be converted into temporary makeshift hostels.
Other problems include financial and administrative crisis, bringing a halt to promotions and staff recruitment as well as academic activities and departmental functions.
“Departments are on the verge of closure, and hundreds of students fear that their education will be cut short overnight. Without any adequate hostel, transport, or welfare facilities, the students are compelled to spend whatever little money they have, surviving at best during this crisis,” the union informed.
It may be recalled that earlier on August 26 this year, the union along with a leader of the CoMSO accompanied by a HC Advocate had met the Governor urging him to intervene and bring a solution to the crisis.
